Its not really "protective" coating, just solder mask. *Nothing* protects
against the Potassium Hydroxide gas that a failing NiCd emits. It'll crawl
up wiring and turn it green from one end to the other. Connectors will
crumble when removed, solder gets contaminated...nasty stuff.
