I should point out that there are other devices out there that can give you
tape saturation. An SOS reviewer liked the tape saturation algorithm in the
Alesis Ineko (also the Akira rack mount version) effects device. It's out
of production, but can be bought used for about $50 or so. Also the Lexicon
MPX-550 has a tape saturation effect at about $400 new. Not to mention the
countless software versions that run on a computer.
And if you subscribe to Sound On Sound magazine, Volume 21, Issue 4, you can
read the "sounding off" column titled "How I learned to stop worring and
love distorion", where he talks about how tape saturation helped the sound
of his recording.
