I'm probably optimistic on this issue, but I don't think all
small companies will be forced out of business. This might
happen for a part of them during the transition process, but
alternate solutions will be developped by or for those small
companies to help them survive. It's probably only a niche
market, but these days lots of small companies live on niche
markets... And it's a well-known fact that reseach for
environment-friendly technologies is a huge source of potential
growth, employment & resources...
and some improvements will probably benefit the small
industry as well as the big corportaions : I'm not a specialist,
but if anyone finds a way to improve the shelf life of lead free
boards PCB boards (your example), I guess everyone will benefit...
some discoveries still happen in home garages... think of that
indian woman who found a way to recycle old plastic bags back
into usable oil...
lots of opportunities for venture capital on the way, for sure...
