It would work, but I think it would be a little fiddly - I'm picturing the cv input having a jack input with attenuation pot plus another pot to manually sweep the scanner (0-10v) so if you turn this pot to center / 5v you would be between input 2 and 3 and would sweep +- 5v up and down 1 and 4.

So if attenuate the cv input you would need to fiddle with the 0-10v pot.

I think your other solution of reducing the gain would work better. Then it would seem less 'fiddly' to me. as no matter where you turned the 0-10v pot the 4th input would be gone and the center position of that pot would now be input 3 instead of between 2 and 3. I'm still a noob though so correct me if I'm wrong.
