Download the files on the Xilinx site for the 3E demo "Amplifier and A/D Converter Control". In the assembly code for the Picoblaze, there is the LCD write routine (bit-banging the 2 control lines) and a simple (and quite crude) method for writing messages (basically, 1 letter at a time). Paul S.
