understandable, you can find lots of examples of how to control the display.
Check out the code for the monowave, it uses an hitachi compatible display, 
also check the noritake itron website, they have a java applet that 
generates code for the interface when you select CPU type and language..

yep, you'll need the pin map file (I forget it's correct name now) which 
gives you a bunch of names you use send data to the various IO pins.
for FPGA new people, and those of us out of practice, its well worth RTFM.
