Depends on the assembler. Something straighforward like 6809, 6502, 
Z80, AVR -- agreed.

But more rudimentary stuff like PIC, 8048/51? I'm not sure if that's
really good for a beginner because there he needs to worry too much
about how to map his problem to the oddities of the architecture.
