I've tried many things over the years - oils,varnish, waxes. The easiest and least maintenance has turned out to be teak oil. Just paint it on with a brush and wipe it in. If you ding a cabinet, just sand the area lightly and re-oil. You can't get away with this on varnish.
Teak oil is also fairly tolerant of dirt and stains - we have a kitchen made in oak - originally waxed, but removed in favour of teak oil because wax stains and marks.
btw it does pong a bit but only until it has soaked in.
