i build and refurbish a lot of guitars, and as far as finishing goes,
i always stick with nitrocellulose laquer. its a little more expensive
and its a little tough to get a hold of a setup to properly apply it,
but nothing else compares to it. you can buy it from www.stewmac.com
in unmixed form if you've already got a spraying unit (you can also
buy their "Preval" units which work very well IMO), or you can buy it
in spray cans from www.reranch.com . when paired with a good final
finishing (sanding, wetsanding, buffing, etc.) the final look is
amazing and unreplicatable with any other paint. it drys very hard to
protect, and gives a "foot deep" shine. a very nice plasticy look with
solid colors, and a very beautiful clear-coated natural look when
applied over stains. the stains can also be bought from
www.stewmac.com, just look under "finishing supplies". hope this
helps.
hopefully helpfully yours,
spencer
