[sdiy] How to keep vintage gear from rusting away?

Shouldn't be any issue. Laquer, enamel, rust inhibiting enamel, even a wipe
over with a light oil.

Don't leave a washed item to dry like that. It's too slow. Also, if the oven
isn't electric (i.e. it is gas), it is likely to be a very humid
environment.  Blow dry it, or wash it with HOT water so that the heat
(transferred to the metal) will cause rapid evaporation. Or wipe down with
alcohol or turps rather than water.
