[sdiy] Convert DC to AC?

My suggestion: build a standard bridge output audio power amplifier using 
something like the TDA2005 (costs less than £2, good for 3A or so and 
there's a circuit in the datasheet). Drive it with your choice of sinewave, 
squarewave or something inbetween (sinewave will need a bigger heatsink!) 
and connect your load between the two outputs.

This has the advantages of current limit, thermal protection, etc. with no 
extra effort.

As the signal source only has to deliver low power it can be whatever you 
like - a 555 if a squarewave is OK, a simple Wien bridge sinewave oscillator 
for low distortion, or your favourite VCO circuit for voltage control...
