Its kinda funny this conversation has come up right now...
I've been looking for a printer to replace my old Phaser 740 ( real colour
laserprinter ) thats just been acting up a bit too much lately. I find that
a bunch of Lexmark Optra S 2450/2455's have come off lease. These are
hardcore printers, 100k monthly page, 17k pages per toner cart. I picked
one up this weekend for $60. It included 2 additional paper trays and a
duplexer plus a network interface. Guy also offered to throw in an envelope
feeder if I wanted one.
Refurb carts are in the $80 range but as they are coming off lease you can
usually find boxes of brand new carts for $40ea. I highly recommend getting
a printer with the duplex option. Makes printing out docs much more
friendly.
Also one last comment about the cheap laser printers, they tend to use
really crappy toner. I dont know if they just use much less or what but
they print fine on paper but do horrid transparencys or water-decals. Also
some of the cheap colour printers are not compatible with the blue toner
transfer sheets at all so make sure you can test the printer for these weird
applications before the return period is up.
