A back-to-back diode dead zone would cure that. With 0.6V either way on a 
+/-12V you could be sloppy about centering without losing much in the way 
of useful groove positioning.

But realistically I doubt you'd hear much variation at - say - 120bpm 8th 
notes anyway, as long as you were in the ballpark.
