[sdiy] preamp or other secret weapons for lo-fi ness a la Basic Channel/Deep Chord... broken filter like Pole?

well of course a nice round compressor for the bass is definitely KEY for
any dub [i like multiband compressors a lot now]... also cheap preamps are
always good for warmth too... not newer stuff [behringer is usually too
crisp] but you can find old budget gear cheap of course, get a preamp and
poke around and you should get some neat results. overdriving analog stuff
is always a good cheap way to get that kind of tubey overdriven sound.

since space echo is soooo expensive, take a look at the univox ec-80 echo
chamber... you can pick them up under 100usd on ebay, and they're pretty
decent. i just wish mine was cleaner [starts to feedback almost instantly
with no input] and you can mod it for some really long delay times... guitar
pedals too! i didn't think i'd use my phaser pedal ever again until i got
into dub, and the ibanez tone lok delay is nice because it's switchable from
echo/delay... panning too... stick the delay before a panner and have it on
an effects bus - you're set for 50% of all dub effects :)

another good tool is anything that operates kind of semirandomly... i do
this with my nord micromodular on EQ patches and synth patches, gives a nice
analog feel.

for the past three or four months i've been absolutely hooked on the 80s
digital dub sound... DCOs just did something so good for the riddims... i've
been working on a bit of stuff and this saturday in new york i'll be doing
my first all dub set at a party in brooklyn [using just gameboy... "GAMEBOY
RIDDIM SOUNDSYSTEM... LET JAH GUIDE YOU IN THE TRUE CHIP SOUND BOYA!"]

check out the theory page on jahtari.org as well as
http://www.interruptor.ch/dub.shtml ... jahtari is a great netlabel for more
standard digital dub/reggae, but the second url is a GREAT resource for
ideas and tools.

I am a big fan of Rhythm and SOund/Basic Channel and Deep Chord. Those guys
make use old analog synths (like Prophet V),t ape delays, perhaps resonators
to create warm and fuzzy minimal dub techno.

I don't have a space echo (but I am lookign for one). What are some other
good tricks for developing noisy, random sound sources?
I have thought of building purposely noisy and glitchy tube preamps... or
perhaps a home made tape echo... room is a consideration (e.g. I am avoiding
using reel-to-reels as tape echos). Any other ideas??

I know that Pole (Stefan Betke) had a broken waldorf filter that he used to
generate static and glitches beautifully.
