I do both. I have a -10dB output for gen purpose and typically an
electronic balanced output that has a level control.

Subject: [sdiy] Synths and output levels

Something's puzzling me that I'm hoping someone here can explain about
synths and output levels. Do most people here design their synthesis
equipment for a balanced +4 dBu output, or an unbalanced consumer
level -10 dBV output? I've been somewhat perplexed by some synths
which have a -20 dBV output level. Since synths are typically used in
studios and live performances, why would some be designed by companies
like Roland with only unbalanced consumer-level outputs?
