I think that the 16 bit serial audio-intended DtoAs
are in fact the cheapest DtoA around. Lack of a guaranteed DC offset
hasn't been a problem (in my experience).
With D/A audio converters, so many are made, that the price is quite low.
Certainly, a serial 16 bit converter is far cheaper than a 10 or 12 bit
parallel converter,
and much easier to find.
