i definitely agree with the pro-laptop argument... when i get my taxes back
i'm going to start working on a tr-808 clone, and one of the main reasons i
got a laptop was so i can have it driving the 808 sounds live. there's stuff
i want to do that isn't possible or very easy to do on a normal hardware
midi sequencer [let alone analog!], and the biggest thing i want in a
sequencer is being able to turn tracks and patterns on and off independantly
of each other, like in ableton... there's only a few pieces of software that
can do that! little sound dj on gameboy, ableton live [which isn't that
great for midi] and littleGP tracker.

my new live setup is the laptop running littleGP tracker, driving a few
synths via midi - the laptop is only for sequencing since i'm using all
hardware synths, and i don't need to do any silly touchpad stuff since the
software is controlled by just a few keys [port from the GP32 handheld
http://www.10pm.org/nostromo/lgpt/ ]

also, i think live performance is at the point now where people don't care
about "laptop artists" as much, with stuff like breakcore [forget idm lol]
getting a lot bigger it's practically impossible to do on a hardware
sequencer. playing gameboy shows i've never heard someone complain that
someone is doing everything on a little toy that's only a few inches by a
few inches... i was playing in new jersey a few weeks ago and the guy i was
on tour with said he heard someone saying "all _gameboy_ music sounds the
same"... and then when i was a few minutes into my set the same guy said
"oh, this is really cool i like it". it's pretty much the same deal as with
laptop based stuff now, the general public is starting to get that it can be
used as an instrument.

anyway, if you've got some huge ass modular i think people are going to
notice with all the blinky lights and stuff that it's actually doing
something.
