I have had variable support from Kenton over the years. This is a shame,
because I still really would like to recommend them for the various
midi products that they offer. Typical of this is a recent request I had
for the installation guide for a Prophet 5 I had in for repair. The chap
on the phone told me that in no way could I have them because 'everybody
wants things for free these days' and that there are loads of different
versions of the interface anyway and he wouldn't be able to find me it
anyhow.
There is no doubt I would chose Rudi Linnhardt over Kenton if I had a
Memorymoog.
For the Prophet 5, if it is a rev 3, then I would fit the original SCi
Interface which is still sold by Wine Country. I did on mine and have
been happy. midi response time is not exactly quick though at approx 12
to 17mS. This maybe true of the Kenton too since it basically hacks into
the keyboard lines and emulates key presses. I can't confirm this though.
The SCi interface does not work with Rev 1 or 2 units.
The advantage of the Kenton is more midi CC control over certain
parameters, but remember that velocity is handled globally and not as a
'per voice' allocation.
The disadvantage is that the Kenton boards sit on the base panel and
gets in the way when servicing. You need to prop the end cheeks on
blocks to avoid squashing the interface. The SCi one is very neat and
sits under the left hand controller wheels.
If I had a Jupiter 8 or OB-8 I would use the Encore products. These are
excellent.
