Are we talking about Synth Edit?
If so, this is one of the most popular VST creating tools there is.
Thousands of VST and VSTi have been created with it, and there is a big
community of users, builders and coders out there.
As far as I can tell, the software is shareware, but is basically free
to use and create your own VST stuff. Its worth giving it a go since it
won't cost a thing. Its not a company either, its one bloke who does it
for fun I believe.
Most of the supplied modules are pretty basic, but there are other folk
who have written other modules that you can use too. Some of these are
really extremely complex and allow you to do all sorts of things.
Personally, I didn't like the shape of the ADSRs in the supplied modules
and I'm not clever enough to code my own modules to improve it. But the
basic set up is very usable and you can have lots of fun playing with
all sorts of new types of synthesis as well as the usual subtractive things.
