Y-ellow Julian 'n' all.
I never managed to finish and publish my "Stupid SMPS ticks"
diatribe. However just some quick thoughts.
If you're going to all this trouble of building a big-assed linear PSU for
your machine, I'm figuring size doesn't matter. (as the actress said to the
bishop) So why not instead, find yourself the biggest, ugliest most
grotesque looking heat sink, then re-mount all the hot components in an
ordinary PC SMPS to it, put the whole thing in a suitably sized and
ventilated box and forget about a fan all together.
The fan is there as a tradeoff. Small fan, small heatsink, small box. No
fan, big heat sink, big box. And if you're not sure of how hot it should
get, just dump an egg on the heat sink. If it fries then it's probably
getting a little warm.
No please don't fry eggs on your PSU. Not without some bacon anyway.
OK. So you end up with a really big ugly looking PC but no more so I
suspect than if you tried to run it on linear PSU that looks more like a
substation.
Of course the other thing I'd always thought of doing, if I could solve the
condensation problem, was to mount the entire machine in a bar fridge. Set
the fridge to "brass monkey" and get a little careless with the CPU speed.
It'd give you somewhere to hide your beer as well.
Hope this helps.
Be absolutely icebox.
