Actually, the problems were more or less explainable and are universal
to any port-powered, unbuffered uC-programmers: No all *standard*
parallel/serial ports on PCs are born equal ;)

But don't build JDM anyway!

On the other hand, something as simple as Broccoli18 has worked for me
with 18F452's, but it uses external power supply-
