Phillip,
Your message is extremely stimulating, thanks.
I knew about the plate reverb site, it's great. But I always thought about
some other ways like the gong example.
Could you explain how do you interface the speaker and the mic to the gong
(or whatever) please?
Do you need a sort of hammer from the speaker to the plate and glue all
together? Or the sillicon rubber will conduct well the vibrations?
The mic is near but not touching the plate?
How much power did you send to the speaker, 5 watt RMS or so?
I always wanted to do such experimentation and use it to make music but I
need some help on some practical issues (as you can notice)
Thanks again!
Fernando

> Dave,
Built a "plate" reverb once using a "gong" a modified
Bose 5" driver and
electret mic. Using the "gong" made it easy as it already had a
"stand" but real plate reverbs do not have a plate with so much
"mass"
with gold foil being preferred. None the less using the gong meant i
didn't have a mounting task prior to testing the useful ness.
I silicon rubber glued the speaker to the "bell" of the gong. I
also
silicon rubber glued the electret mic to the other side of the gong
toward the edge of the gong. It sounded great (no longer have it as the
gong wasn't mine and after 20 years of having it surrendered it back to
the owner who wanted to use it, of all things, percussion). Also
mounted a speaker with silicon on a Tympani head but that's another
story.
After doing it my thoughts for improvement where 1) an additional mic
located in a contrasting location for "stereo" and 2) mounting the
speaker off center to require a little less power (drove it with a 15
watt "Sanken" amp module).
Here's a ref to something a little more legit:
