Hi Again,
Just wanted to thank you all for your comments and suggestions.
After checking continuity I gave the ribbon interface sockets of the main and keyboard PCBs a good squirt of contact cleaner, along with the pins on both sides the ribbon. This did the trick. It seems pin 8 just wasn't making solid electrical contact with the corresponding ribbon sockets.
If it stops working after the contact cleaner dries I'll just have to replace the ribbon cable and the pcb sockets. As you can imagine, I'm glad I won't have to track down an 8021 microprocessor :-).
All that troubleshooting and it turned out to be a dirty/oxidized socket or ribbon pin. I think there is a lesson in this for synth repair and perhaps synth design in general.
I certainly learned quite a bit about the circuitry and mechanics of j-wire keyboards. Hopefully someone with a similar problem will find this thread equally helpful.
Thanks again everyone... this place is great.
-Tom
