WHY? (was Re: [sdiy] ... Simulating a Moog)

same here. i'm more of a musician than a tech or sopund designer, and i
noticed i get things done with the stuff i have now, which i guess is the
sound i'm looking for. most are simple analogue mono's: even something like
thce mono/poly can already be too much is you actually want to finish a
track. sometimes i don't want 10.000 possibilities, but just one that sounds
good. something like the tr808 is a perfect example of that.

to me something like the Neuron is very cool, but way too expensive. i know
plenty of people who'd be interested inone, but simply can't afford it. look
at things like the whole circuit benders scene: there is a want for new
sounds.

software.. i hate all the 'virtual X' clones, but it's what sells, and these
companies also have to pay the rent at the end of the month...
otoh it's all this softeware stuff that is making people lazy. all these
'make music instantly' programs really make people believe it can be done
like that, combine that with the 'instant gratification' disease that most
consumers suffer from these days and that's the result.
then again i see that as sort of the 'hobby market' of people who are just
fiddling around with music, and who very likely wouldn't buy a full studio
if the software wasn't there.

and last but not least there's the sound. i've had and heard a lot of
machinery that could in theory do very interesting things: nord modular,
roland v-synth, kawai k5000, etc. but i find their sound quality lacking
compared to a real full blown analogue synth. so then the whole process to
me is not worth it, or worth significantly less that these synths are sold
for.
