         There is a hardware equivalent....the Magic of the FPGA.  For 
about $20US you can get a massive amount of digital hardware that would 
make the Fairlight and Synclavier  pale in comparison.  On my desk right 
next to me I have one chip that is equivalent to all of the parts that in 
the next room (my work shop)....and Cynthia can vouch for the fact that I 
have a very large inventory of parts.  In some ways, we live in the 
"Diamond Age" (a book by Neal Stephenson) now....  I suspect I could 
duplicate my entire TX816 rack inside of the single XC3S400 that is on this 
eval board I have.....the only thing stopping me at the moment is something 
that is in very short supply right now....free time :-(
