[sdiy] OT : environmental cost of computer chips

         Like I've said. Just send 'em to me. I'm sure I could use at least 
a couple a hundred of 'em. I've always wanted an experimental super 
computer. :)

How about a hundred or so P-1 lap tops to... Ooo I dunno, Wall paper a wall 
with.

A friend of mine recently pointed out that recycling isn't really an answer 
it's a last resort. The only way to make products and save the environment 
is to make things to last.

I tend to keep computer gear in service or awaiting re-tasking for at least 
twice as long as the average Japanese person keeps a car. After 3, or is it 
5, years, in Japan, one MUST buy a new car and recycle the old. Unlike 
computers, cars aren't exactly designed to be upgraded when more efficient 
technology comes along. Unless you're a hot-rod enthusiast perhaps?

It costs energy and resources to manufacture something. It costs energy and 
resources to recycle something. Hell, it costs energy and resources just to 
DUMP something. None of which is recoverable. The faster you cycle a 
product, no matter how you do it, the more cost to the environment as a 
whole. Aluminium for example, is known as "Solidified Electricity" in the 
industry. It costs more in power than it does in actual raw material to 
manufacture the stuff.

"Computers don't kill people. The idiots who buy them do." To paraphrase 
the NRA.

But, according to the pentagon report, the planet is already fucked beyond 
repair. So you might as well enjoy all those cheeseburgers now while you 
still can. The sooner we're all gone, the sooner the planet can start 
evolving intelligent life.

But if you send me you're old lap tops, I'll buy you a MacDonald's Salad. 
Which I read recently, is actually far more toxic than their Cheeseburgers 
anyway.
