[sdiy] OT : environmental cost of computer chips

Well, in our FAB the water is running in closed
cycles. The water which is finally comming out, is so pure that
salt has to be mixed in order to fill the little lake.
The plants and fish in this lake seem to be very happy for
years now.

You could say that the fab is actually cleaning water.

The FAB uses also a lot of N2,He, Ar and other gases.
The are taken from the athmosphere, and getting back.

Of course, the FAB uses Cl, As, B. These are poisons.
But they do not appear in complex molekules, so they are easy to
neutralize.

Basically you are worried what could come INTO the FAB (pollution),
thereby you also control very closely what is comming out.

So the FAB uses resources, but does not pollute much.
A coal power plant, and even more a nuclear are much more dirty.

The power consumption is certainly high, finished silicon
needed a lot of KWh.

It would be interesting to relate that to the energy needed for steel
and aluminum.
