Make sure you're not presenting too much voltage at the input of the
device.  +/- 10mV is a general level you want to not exceed, or else you
can get into all sorts of problems--distortion being one of them.  

Assuming that's your issue, try checking the voltage divider at the front
of your circuit, and the buffer at the output, to see if you made any
mistakes (like, mixing up the big and small resistors at input voltage
divider...and then getting fuzz city!!!)
 
BTW, a good book on this, that I found useful anyway, is "Making Music
with the 3080" by Thomas Henry.  It's available for purchase from his
site, and IMO it's well worth the price in saved time.
