And clean the stylus on a regular basis. I use denatured alcohol using a 
medium stiffness brush. Rubbing alcohol may leave deposits on the 
stylus. Remove the cartridge and hold with the stylus down so the 
alcohol does not run into the suspension. Viewing with a loupe or 
microscope will show the build-up and whether it has been sufficiently 
cleaned.

This can't be restated enough.

On the subject of static, the Discwasher company used to make a really 
cool product called the "Zerostat". Was a white, pistol-like device that 
used ions to neutralize the static charge on the surface of the vinyl. 
Still have mine from the mid '70s. Seems to still be made here:
