Using a capacitor to "differentiate" the pulse can give a very
narrow pulse at each edge of the input pulse. Diodes can be used
to eliminate the one you don't want. If you want an adjustable
pulse width, then this narrow pulse can be used to trigger a
one-shot (ICL7555 timer), but that's more parts, more complex.
If all you want is a very narrow pulse, the differentiator works
well and is simple, a cap, a resistor, a couple of diodes. The
size of the cap and resistor determine how wide the output pulse
will be.
