I've not had real bad luck with them, but I guess it depends. Switchcraft
seems to make a pretty good part...

Have you looked at "long frame" 1/4" jackes? These are designed to be packed
very closely in a small amount of space, but stick out quite a ways behind
the panel. I don't know if that would work with your setup or not.

You'll have a very short run of unshielded wire at the jack, and also at the
plug, assuming you're using dual plugs? No reason you can't use shielded
wire with those...
