[sdiy] Another new hard to find part....

As for using some variant of Linux as a dedicated music platform, it might
be nice to have something like Knoppix optimized for musical purposes. In
case you didn't know, Knoppix is a Linux distro that runs directly from a
CD, and doesn't need to be installed on your hard drive. I *think* you can
even build a computer with no floppy drives and no hard drives at all, and
Knoppix would continue to function just fine. I think you only need a
bootable CD drive for basic use. This could potentially be a big security
advantage, especially for computers connected to a network. It's pretty
darn hard to infect a CD-R with a virus. ;)

For music purposes, I envision a modified Knoppix-style OS, that you stick
into your bootable CD-ROM drive whenever you feel like booting into an
alternative SoftSynth-DIY universe, instead of your normal OS. Keep all
your important stuff on your hard drive, using whatever OS you prefer to
use, and only boot the Knoppix-style music OS when you actually need to. I
wish that Windows would run from a CD like this. I could then make Windows
my alternative OS, for those occasions when I really need it. ;)
