In the analog world, I must say I'm partial to OTAs (CA3080, CA3280, LM13700) - the resistorless wonders. Hasn't it been said before that resistance is futile? :-)
Also transistor arrays, and of course the ubiquitous op-amp.

In the digital world:
Programmable gate arrays, DSPs, microcontrollers and of course, microprocessors!

For shoes, TP, and bedside storage, may I suggest surface mount devices? I would think that they would be less painful :-)
