PS: getting closer to topic, favourite/most useful IC -- I'm in favour
of nice, good-quality LDOs, such as the LP2980 or the LM1117. Whereas
a case may be made for using discrete transistors for the signal path,
a discrete-only power supply is just silly. Huge amounts of R&D has
gone into making regulator ICs cheap, clean and quiet.....may as well
make use of it.
