Well, I don't know about "quite the contrary," since dithering decreases the
*apparent* noise. :-) Before noise-shaping, CD players had dynamic range of
< 96 dB. Now, dynamic range often exceeds 100 dB.

One could argue that dithering is a form of distortion because it changes
the waveform from its "original" shape. (But hey, I know that dithering is
usually a good thing.)
