I was all set to complain about that not being very "DIY" when I discovered 
you were talking about a *portable* DAT - yeah, there's no way I'd open one 
of those up unless I *really* had to. 

Am I right in thinking that the standard remote is in-line with the 
headphones? Would it perhaps be possible to obtain another set of 
headphones/remote and then modify that in the way that Daniel and I 
suggested? 

Failing that, I guess you need the specifics of Sony's interface and 
signalling - others will know better, but don't the remotes often simply 
consist of a bunch of switches each connecting one of several voltages (from 
a resistor chain) to a common pin. Hang on - voltage control...sounds 
analogue ;-)
