here's my story:
my first circuit was LF oscillator, about 2Hz, that blinked a light bulb. It was intended for my bike, but never got to it. My dad did most of the work, like etching PCB and soldering those sensitive germanium transistors :) That was about 1980.
Then I found an article in tech magazine for kids about small organ. 2-transistor oscillator and 13 trimpots. That was big fun. The board with the trimpots was the first that I actually painted, etched and soldered. It was huge, like 5x10cm. And the little synth was so cool at the time. Couple of years later I made styrofoam keyboard for it. I regret I don't have it anymore.
Next synth was form another magazine, 2-transistor type too, but with addons like dividers, second voice on small bass-keyboard, drummachine (only one voice - "cymbal", made from enveloped noise and 16 patterns of 16 steps stored in germanium diode array), and probably something else. It had wooden keys, about 2.5 octave and was looking nice. But the keys were terrible, stucking all the time, the circuitry had problems too, so I dismantled it all in anger. I think I smashed most of it with a hammer and broke the wooden base and keys.
Then there was a time of highschool and first approach to polysynth, and then I forgot about synths for about 5 years. And when I wanted to get rich making TB303 clones, I found this list...

Temat: [sdiy] new guy - how did you start
hey everybody, i have been on the list for a several weeks now and have enjoyed all the information so far. although alot of it is way over my head, i think this forum is right up my alley, as they say. what i would like to know from you all is... how did you get into this? what made you decide to start making your own music machines? what was your fist diy project? how did it work out for you ( did you bite off more than you could chew, or was it a smooth operation)? what would you say, besides sdiy, was the most important resource to you when you started (a book or project or mentor) and what would you fine folks recomend as a good beginner project. i know that is kind of alot, but i am curious. thanks for all the info thus far and for all you may provide in the future.
