[sdiy] Atmel "Dream Synthesizer"

Under NDA and last time I asked rather high minimum order quantity and
rather expensive development tools if you want to do your own programming.
BUT very interesting chip family, kind of a one chip Chameleon.
The flag ship offers a 2x64 voice DSP core and two fast 16 bit uCs for midi,
IO, LFOs, ENV and the like.
One of the smaller 64 voice ICs offers a real synth on a ship. Including
velocity sens keyscan and 16 analogue control inputs.
At one point there where detailed data sheets online.
Different from other DSP there is a scheduler that divides the DSP into a
number of "voice" slots. But you may combine voices to do more complex
synthesis or use a voice/slot to do reverb or other FX.
Cause of the "voice scheduler" programming is a bit odd compared to other
DSP.
There are 64 process slots (voices), each slot is divided in 16
"algorithms".
These "algorithms" are your blocks with DSP program code.
The catch is there is only room for 32 algorithms in the 512x38 small AL
memory.
Even so it can do more than just ROMpler stuff.
You can buy this with "turn-key" program options from Dream or from Roland.
The latter gives you something close to a JV series synth.
But the license doesn't allow you to use the Roland programming in musical
instrument unless the retail is under $4 :)
Cheers,
Theo
