Ryan, the main problem is you will soon get sick of burning it with the iron!
but, I'd put a layer of thin particle board over it (I have a pine bench
that I do this with, if the board ever gets too burnt I can replace it for
$3 or so).
Fortunately I'm in Melbourne Australia where it is never dry enough for
static problems, unlike the US midwest in winter for example.
