That would make a good text file format for storing patch info on a computer that is both human and machine readable.
It's not too unlike the way electronic parts and connections are represented internally in schematic capture/PCB design software, but on a higher level.

Bill Sequeira has come up with a compact patch notation scheme for modular
synthesizers. It uses a hierarchical notation to uniquely identify knobs and
connections in systems and multi-modules.
