For your entertainment, here's how I would do it.
This is for the situation typically found in a classic modular VCO; a
number of inputs, an input level control pot for each, and zero or
more DC parameter pots (ie., tuning) all summed together. There could
be several of these summers for a module.
The goal is to efficiently digitize all the pot values.
Add an analog mux to the input of each pot to select between the real
input, ground and a reference voltage. Tap the voltage off the summer
ouput, and the summers from each module are muxed together and
connected to an ADC.
When you hit the 'Save Patch' button the input muxes are all set to
ground and then each of the pots is sequentially scanned; its mux is
set to the reference voltage and the summer output is read and
digitized by the ADC.
