The wavelength of the low E on a bass guitar (42 Hz) is 26 feet.   
Your ears are about 6 inches apart.

Direction doesn't really mean much at that scale.

Whenever you have multiple speakers you get cancelling effects.  It's
expected and accepted.  For instance, if you play a 500Hz mono sine
wave into both speakers of a stereo pair and then walk around the room
you'll hear nodes every foot or so.  Nobody complains about that.

Sure.  Yet the 1x18 will probably have far better characteristics with
respect to enclosure size, efficiency, weight, low end response, etc.
(Otherwise larger speakers wouldn't sell.)
