Yep; consider the way Roland felt compelled to
invent new names for everything in the 1980s because
they couldn't bring themselves to refer to a
digital filter as a "VCA". Thus we got "time-variant"
everything: TVF, TVA, etc. And the DCO. I notice
that "VCF" and "VCA" don't bother Nord, Novation,
Access, etc.
When I got my EML 101 I was amused by some of
their names: "amplitude shaper" for a VCA, and
"sampler" for a S/H circuit. ("What, you mean
EML had a sampler in 1970? And an analog one at
that? What did it use, mercury-delay-line memory?")
