Hi yes LM709 is fine. Point is the 709 was a very early opamp with external
frequency compensation which is vital to the circuit
working. Substituting for an opamp with internal freq compensation wont
work (I know ..I tried it :-) ). Luckily the LM709 is still in production
when I last checked.
