I have sort of a love-hate relationship with SD myself. In the end
it's still the tool that gets most of the things I would want to do
faster than anything else. I got it reasonably cheap by upgrading an
OEM version that came with one of my synths.

I've done quite a few MIDI hacks in Perl (nothing realtime) and even
started writing a SysEx module for Perl that I recently managed to get
to work for the first time. It doesn't do anything useful yet, the plan
is to move the core of the assorted scripts that I have collected over
the years to the module and shave off their repetitious code. I've
looked at using PerlTk for an editing surface, but was disgusted.
However the latest iterations of Java MIDI support finally seem to work
correctly with physical MIDI interfaces.
