[sdiy] keyboard

Ray,
Thanks for your work in the area of keyboard building. It has helped me out
tremendously. Eventually I will finish my first 1v/oct controller which is a
72 key unit made from a Crumar Baby Grand keybed. Second one will be from a
Yamaha keyboard found in the trash.

I have found three excellent keyboards in people's trash here on Long Island
in the last two years. For some reason you find them most often when it is
raining. ( Third law of electronic scrap hunting ).

For anyone who is interested I have found that older computer keyboards that
use individual switches per key are an excellent source for single key
contacts. Avoid the individual carbon pad type, they can be very mushy. The
rare magnetic reed switch variety, is pure gold as far as I'm concerned. It
is very easy to build a multiple buss keyboard using reeds and magnets.

Another source: pawn shops.

Also I can't help but wonder why people in Santa Barbara can't give organs
away? Is there some law against it? Does Arnold know about this?

I am always on the hunt for keyboards too. I hate to part with $300.00 to
$400.00 to get something I'm going to tear up. You can also switch-ify (I
want credit for that word) an old piano keyboard and there are tons of old
pianos around that people just want hauled away.

Good hunting

Ray

Hate to say it, but you will have to be like a vampire and suck the life
out of another instrument if you want a keyboard. Try to locate something
very cheap with a keyboard...Here in Santa Barbara, people cannot give away
organs. Else where, I am sure you will be able to find some unwanted
instrument that you will not feel the least bit bad about junking just to
get the keyboard. I got my first keyboard this way. Also, keep your eyes
pealed at the surplus stores, however, that is a long shot.
