If the knob has shaft, it probably means it's for trimmers, or some kind of hollow pot. Usually knobs have hole for pot's shaft.
And yes, there are many standards. There it 1/4'', 1/8'', 6mm, 4mm, 3mm, and probably some more. The shaft can be knurled, splined, flatted or sloted.
If you have 1/8'' knobs, you can redrill them to any bigger size. It takes some precision and patience but it's possible. I have redrilled a few brass insert set-screw 6mm hole knobs into 1/4'' with great success.
