[sdiy] semi ot: electrolytics / bomb ?

I just discovered a box with 16 37000uF, 75V Siemens elcos.
They are huge cans, 7cmx15cm (or so), screw terminals.
I remember I bought them back in 89
or so. Since then they sit and wait. Total lack of time.

Now I know that the "isolation" could be not that good
after so many years. Therefore a "formatting" is recommend
via some high resistance.

My question: has anybody done this for so old lytics?
How many % of the rated voltage did you apply?
If the leakage stops, how are the future prospects?

I would assume that after some time the oxidation
process will stop the leakage.
But perhaps there is a pitfall for the long term
aspect. If I'm going to use these things, I do not
want them to explode in my face. Or damage the case.

m.c.
