[sdiy] PIC / Atmel Programmers

The atmel processors can all be programmed in circuit, however, you
need the in circuit programming cable. You can get this by purchasing
the Atmel starter kit, which I think they call the STK500 now. It is
not very expensive, and worth the money. I used it to get used to the
programming environment.

You will also probably need a C compiler to go with that. I can
recomend two.

The Image Craft compiler is what I have, and , it is a good
compiler. I so far, have not had any problems with it.

The other good one is the CodeVision compiler. I only know this one
by reputation. If I ever get enough ahead financially, I am going to
get a copy of this one to run on my other computer. I am pretty sure
both compilers are under $200 (please check), and again, it is well
worth the expenditure.

I primarily use the AT90S8515 in a forty pin dip. This has been
superceeded by the ATMEGA8515. The C compiler works great both parts.
