Hey Michael, 

I think you should shoot for a functional equivalent to an ARP 2600. There's
a reason it's such a desirable classic. Other than that, I think there are
two schools of thought: 1)Make a single, highly complex synth voice with
lots of modulators, processors, wave manglers, etc., or 2)Make a unit with
several simple voices (just a VCO or two, VCF, VCA, two EGs and an LFO) that
can be played separately or combined and intermodulated for more complex
sounds. Notice what neat sounds you can make when you link together two or
three simple synths like an Axxe or a Micromoog.
